Linguistic Complexity: Relationships Between Phoneme Inventory Size, Syllable Complexity, Word and Clause Length, and Population Size

چکیده
Starting from a view on language as complex, hierarchically organized system composed of many parts that have interactions, this paper investigates statistical relationships between the linguistic variables “phoneme inventory size,” “syllable “length words,” clauses,” and nonlinguistic variable “population size.” By analyzing parallel textual material 61 languages (18 families) we found strong positive correlations phoneme size, mean number phonemes per syllable, monosyllables. We observed significant negative size length words clauses, measured syllables. then correlated complexity data with estimated speaker population sizes could reveal more speakers tend to shorter in syllables, higher monosyllabic words, clause. Moreover, reproduce results former studies correlation for our sample. The findings are discussed light previous research within framework Systemic Typology. propose syllable is key factor identified study, Zipf's law Abbreviation explains associations “word length,” complexity,” extralinguistic

Population size, learning, and innovation determine linguistic complexity
There are a number of claims regarding why linguistic complexity varies, for example: i) different types of societal structure (e.g. Wray & Grace, 2007), ii) population size (e.g. Lupyan & Dale, 2010), and iii) the proportion of child vs. adult learners (e.g. Trudgill, 2011). This simple model of interacting agents, capable of learning and innovation, partially supports all these accounts. Howe...
متن کاملDoes phoneme inventory size correlate with population size?
Atkinson 2011 finds a significant positive correlation between population size and phoneme inventory size (confirming Hay & Bauer 2007) and explains it by migration: phoneme sizes are largest in Africa, and as societies spread out of Africa and around the world they went through population and cultural bottlenecks and underwent phonological simplification as a consequence. We believe the correl...
متن کاملThe Paradox of Linguistic Complexity and Community Size
It has been observed that languages with huge numbers of speakers tend to be structurally simple while small communities can sometimes develop languages with great structural complexity. Paradoxically, an apparent opposite pattern appears to be observed in relation to non-structural properties of language such as number of content words. These apparent contradictory patterns pose a challenge fo...
متن کاملPopulation size predicts technological complexity in Oceania.
Much human adaptation depends on the gradual accumulation of culturally transmitted knowledge and technology. Recent models of this process predict that large, well-connected populations will have more diverse and complex tool kits than small, isolated populations. While several examples of the loss of technology in small populations are consistent with this prediction, it found no support in t...
